Overview of Tairunnessa Memorial Medical College (TMMC)

Tairunnessa Memorial Medical College (TMMC) is among the oldest private medical college located in Gazipur, Bangladesh, established in 1995. It is an institution of the Tairunnessa Memorial Medical Centre. It was founded by Mohammad Shamsul Hoque, named after his mother, the late Tairunnessa, a social reformer. There is a girls' school in her name in Balaganj as well.

It offers a five-year course of study leading to a Bachelor of MedicineBachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree. A one-year internship after graduation is compulsory for all graduates. The degree is recognized by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC), National Medical Commission(NMC)Nepal Medical Council (NMC)Maldives Medical and Dental Council (MMDC), and Bhutan Medical and Health Council (BMHC)Affiliation with the University of Dhaka.

M Shamsul Hoque was born in January 1943 in Hamidpur, Rajnagar in Moulvibazar District. He helped the religious minorities to flee the country with a small ship he owned. As a result, he was wanted by the Pakistani army in 1971. He established a School named Tairunnessa Girls' High School in Balaganj in 1977.

Tairunnessa Memorial Medical Center started as a small outpatient department at Konia, Gazipur District in 1995 which over the years has turned into a hospital and research center; TMMC Hospital, a 500-bed hospital complex, a 9 storied college building, and an administrative block, a ladies' hostel & boys' hostel. It is now one of the renowned medical colleges in Dhaka with all departments.

Tairunnessa Memorial Medical College is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, published by the World Health Organization (WHO), and is now maintained as the Avicenna Directory for Medicine and also listed in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED). IMED (International Medical Education Directory) recognition allows TMMC medical students/ graduates to apply for the USMLE examination by ECFMG, the USA for employment and for post-graduate training in the United States and Canada as well as can apply for PLAB, AMC, and NZREX examinations, etc. Also, graduates of TMMC are eligible for limited registration with the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom.

A nursing institute was formed in 2008, awarding a B.S.C nursing degree. This became a unit of Tairunnessa Memorial Medical College in 2013.

The TMMC has around 700 students, including students from Nepal and India. The hospital has expanded to 600-beds, and provides 24-hour emergency service, with an additional trauma center, EPI, etc. 515 MBBS doctors have passed till December 2018.

This program of study leads to a 3 years diploma course. The institute has been approved by Bangladesh Nursing Council.

Curriculum Design: The current Senior Registered Nurse SRN curriculum was revised by the Bangladesh Nursing Council (BNC) with technical assistance from the World Health Organization, Bangladesh. As BNC has taken account of national policies as well as outcomes of various studies and major stakeholders meetings, major changes in the SRN curriculum, which is now called Diploma Nursing Science and midwifery (2006). The curriculum is designed to incorporate (1) general education courses to prepare students to understand the world, understand the human behavior and be able to communicate in English, (2) foundation courses to furnish students with essential knowledge relevant to nursing, and (3) professional courses for nursing and midwifery specific courses. The courses are sequenced from year one to year three, from simple to complex, in an attempt to increase students' competencies over time.
The school has designed a specific curriculum that prepares the student to develop an aptitude for nursing and to provide the required knowledge and skills to give comprehensive nursing care to patients of all types of illness.

Curriculum Structure :

  • Total credits=110 semester credits
  • Numbers in the parenthesis indicate total classroom study hours, hours in the laboratory, and/or clinical practice hours in a semester.
  • Numbers are assigned as the followings:
  • 1 credit for classroom study is equal to 16 hours per semester
  • 1 credit for Laboratory is equal to 32 hours per semester
  • 1 credit for clinical practice is equal to 96 hours per semester
  • One semester is equal to 18 weeks with one week for the midterm exam and another week for the final exam. Between semesters, there will be a school break for a minimum of 4
  • weeks which will allow time for students who fail a course to take a re-exam or to do additional study/assignment/practice to improve their academic performance in order to fulfill the requirement of the course.
  • Duration of Training: There should be a minimum period of three years of education. A student must pass the prescribed prerequisite course (s),if any, to be able to study in a specific higher-level course. At the end of the program, the student is required to take the BNC comprehensive examination for certification and licensing as a registered nurse.
  • Medium of Instruction: The English language is used as a medium of instruction with supplemental Bangla language, as necessary.
  • Clinical Practice: During the course, there is considerable emphasis on relevant clinical skills to meet the needs of a changing profession and community expectations. During the training period, all students will be specially trained at our own 350 Bedded Hospital facilities at TMMC&H with Medicine, Surgery, OBG, Ortho, ENT, Ophthalmology, ICU, Psychiatry & other departments apart from educational institutes, TMMC&H is a prominent name in the healthcare sector of Bangladesh.
  • Student Welfare Activities: The welfare of students is an important part of this Institution. It broadly covers their physical, mental, social-cultural, and spiritual well-being. Students' needs will be met by providing the following facilities:

Eligibility Criteria of Tairunnessa Memorial Medical College (TMMC)

ADMISSION REQUISITES :

1.  Entry Qualification: 
  • The applicants must have passed both SSC & HSC or equivalent Examinations from nay groups preferably Science from any board of Intermediate and Secondary Education or any other board of Bangladesh. The applicants must have a GPA not less than 2.5 for the HSC examination.
  • The Candidates will apply within 3 (three) years of passing the HSC or equivalent Examination.
  • Medical Examination (physical & mental) fitness will be essential before admission.
  • Students will be single.
  • Age should be 17 Years old according to the original birth certificate, a special affidavit for age certification will not be accepted;
  • Admission of students shall be once a Year.
  • The application should be submitted to the Principal of TMMC Nursing Institute of Nursing with:
    1. Photocopy of SSC & HSC certificate, Photocopy of marks obtained in the above said examination, Photocopy of higher qualification certificate, if any, One copy of recent passport size photograph (to be pasted in the form.),Character Certificate.
    2. Admission procedure: It will be formulated and conducted by the concerned authority as laid down in the curriculum.
    3. Degree awarded: Diploma in Nursing & Midwifery. The certificate will be provided by the BNC (Bangladesh Nursing council).
    4. On the successful completion of the degree, the student is required to take the BNC comprehensive examination for getting the certificate and licensing as a registered nurse.

A college you should seek for!

College Infrastructure Cleanliness is maintained very well and are up to date with technology and design. The labs are very nicely kept, no broken or unopen things are kept here and there. The faculties are very good and well-qualified doctors and complete the syllabus on time. The facilities are good and so supportive & lots of books available in the library, college hostels are available for both males and females, good classrooms, etc. The seniors are good , very co-operative and helpful........
