What is difference between B.E. and B.Tech?

By: Career Marg Team | on February 22, 2022

Bachelor of Engineering is an Undergraduate Academic Degree awarded for a course or program in the field of Engineering. The Bachelor of Engineering degree is one of the most pursued Degrees in the world. Bachelor of Engineering degree programs generally lasts 3 to 5 years depending upon the country. In India, the duration of Bachelor of Engineering Degree spans over a period of 4 years. The 4 year course consists of 8 semesters of instruction and a project in final year. A person seeking an Engineering Degree needs to study 5 subjects. There is a various number of combinations of subjects, which one can opt for depending upon the availability of choices in various Institutes. It is popularly known as B.E. which is an abbreviated form of the Engineering Degree. Engineering Courses are offered by most Public and Private Universities in India. Some of the universities in India award B.Tech. i.e.; Bachelor of Technology instead of B.E for same Engineering Course. Some Institutions award a Bachelor of Science (BSc), Bachelor of Engineering Science (BSc), Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) or Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) degree to undergraduate students of engineering study. For example, Canada is the only country that awards the BASc. degree for graduating engineers. In India, some Universities like B R Ambedkar Bihar University, Vinoba Bhave University etc., offer Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.Sc. in engineering) in place of Bachelor of Engineering. It is equivalent to B.E. or B.Tech. Engineering students work are involved in planning, designing, construction, production, testing, implementation and maintenance etc. Students work on scientific theories to get practical solutions. Engineering extends its branches catering to industries, technology and business.

Difference between B.E. and B.Tech.

To look for an answer to the question that is there any difference between Bachelors of Engineering and Bachelors of Technology is same as looking for a Black cat in a Black room when the cat is not there. Yet thinking that there can be no smoke without fire we are trying to clear the air by taking the talked about the difference between these two engineering difference and their practical impact on the future course of action.

Bachelor of Engineering Bachelor of Technology
Known as Plain engineering.

Known as Bachelors in engineering technology.
B.E. is knowledge oriented.

B. Tech. is skill-oriented.
The plain engineering is more of theoretical based research

While engineering technology is more of application engineering.
B. E. emphasize on in-depth concept clarification of facts.

Emphasize on Practical exposure of Conceptual Knowledge
In the late 70s and early 80s institutes offering Engineering with other degrees, called their engineering degree B.E.

Institute offering only Engineering degrees called their degree - B.Tech.
Mostly Private Universities or self affiliated colleges like the IIT etc. offer B. Tech. degrees. Offered by Colleges affiliated by various Universities

Answer to the question that which of the two are considered as greater degree greatly depends upon the mindset and work culture of the countries concerned rather than the Degree itself.

Hands-on-experience is preferable to knowledge in many countries (not in INDIA. In India, only knowledge is provided and experienced is gained on the job itself).

In many countries, an Engineer without skill is not considered as an Engineer. To focus this point only, B. Tech. the course was developed. Its one and the same basically, But IIT's and foreign Countries call it B. Tech. instead of B.E.

Conclusion

As both B.E and B.Tech. has the same general syllabus and both the degrees are treated the same for jobs and higher studies and there is no difference in the duration of the course i.e both are four years degree course. Thus there is no applicable difference between these two degrees at all and the student need not to bother whether they are getting admission in B.E or B.Tech.

Eligibility

Only students from the science stream at +2 level (XI and XII) are eligible for the Bachelor of Engineering course. Age Limit is 17. Students are admitted on the basis of std XII marks or State-Common Entrance Test (CET) or Deemed University entrance Exam or centralized All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). Selection to BE is based on merit i.e the marks secured in the final exams of 10+2 and through entrance exams. Entrance to the IIT's is through 'JEE' (Joint Entrance Exam) and for other institutions through their own separate entrance exams and other state level and national level exams. Most of the institutes conducting engineering courses in Aeronautics consider JEE score as the qualifying grade. Diploma holders in engineering are also eligible for entry into B.E. Diploma holders of engineering enter degree course, by lateral entry, which gives some concessions in study of subjects.

Who can and Who should pursue Bachelor of Engineering Degree or Bachelor of Technology Degree

Bachelor of Engineering Degree is one of the toughest Degree's to attain. It is not 'Everybody's Cup of Cake'. For starters, one needs to qualify for entry into an Engineering College. For that one has to take coaching. Then the examinations are a challenge in itself. After completing the examinations, there is a wait of month or so before the results come out. When the results come, there is a ranking system. One may not get admission into top Institutes so one has satisfy with average Institutes. Most of the students are always under constant pressure and stress in order to perform well. There is a lot of extensive syllabi which is accompanied by practicals. Engineering students, therefore, need to be very focused and be consistent in performance to get desired results. Some students have good in an in-depth study of how things work but mere knowledge is not enough, one needs to get good grades to have better employment opportunities. Before pursuing the Engineering Degree one needs to have an insight on whether one is prepared to take up the challenges involved and whether one really has the potential to become an Engineer. Another challenge is which Specialisation to take, one which is really worthy or one which interests us the most. One has to compromise on this aspect and to solve this one can seek guidance from current students and have counselled with a Career Counsellor.
